Stella Victoria takes black type race at Doomben

Robert Heathcote has been predicting for months his mare Stella Victoria would win a stakes race in the summer carnival but he wasn't on hand to see it come true.

The five-time Brisbane premier trainer has become an avid golfer late in life and was in Tasmania catching up with family and playing the famous Barnbougle course on Saturday when Stella Victoria ($3.40) won the Listed Legacy Fillies and Mares Classic (1640m) at Doomben.

Jockey Jeff Lloyd had the mare outside the pace most of the way and she came away to win by one-and-three-quarter lengths from She Sees Everything ($5) with early leader Conquering Lass ($31) one-and-a-quarter lengths further back.

Heathcote took over training Stella Victoria after owner Wilf Mula sent her north looking for black type.

Mula had success with Heathcote through a horse called Malta which won several good races in Brisbane including the 2006 Recognition Stakes.

Stable spokeswoman Mel Sharpe said Stella Victoria had raced well in Sydney at her previous start during the strike in Brisbane,

"We brought her back and freshened her up and she looked to be nicely placed here. The plan was to be on the pace and it proved a perfect idea," she said.

"Rob has been saying she can win black type for months and it has come true but she isn't finished yet and we will be back here in a fortnight for the Listed Just Now Quality."

Lloyd said it had been a good fighting win because he had not had much peace up on the pace.

Matt McGillivray who rode She sees Everything said the mare tried hard but the winner kicked on too well.

Trainer Steve Tregea was thrilled with Conquering Lass's effort.

The margin might have been slender but sectional times confirm the merit of Femme Fireball's win at Doomben.

Starting the $1.70 favourite, Femme Fireball had only a short neck to spare when she overhauled Hingus Rose ($5.50) to win the Orthochick Handicap.

Femme Fireball clocked 1:18.88 secs for the 1350m trip with a final 600m sectional time of 33.80 secs.

The mare was conceding Hingus Rose six lengths start at the 600m before gaining the upper hand in the final stages so her effort/closing sectionals must have been in the low 33s for the last 600.

Results Best Odds Margin

14 Femme Fireball $1.9/$1.5 1:18.88

21 Hingus Rose $1.65 place 0.20L

32 Trois Choix $2.7 place 0.30L

Jockey Dale Smith knew the tempo of the race was unlikely to suit Femme Fireball but praised the mare's determination when it came to the crunch in the straight.

"They went steady and that was always our worry going into the race but I said to Rob 'let's ride her like she's the best horse in the race'," Smith said.

"She's run home her last furlong in 11 (seconds) and change so it's onwards and upwards with her. She's going really well."

Trainer Rob Heathcote is considering giving Femme Fireball a freshen-up before targeting the Magic Millions Fillies and Mares at the Gold Coast in January. There are still several nice race options the upcoming month.

"She's got a booming finish as we've seen and while it may not have looked impressive, they've run home in 33.8 seconds and she's given them a start," Heathcote said.

"I haven't done a lot with her in the two weeks since she won first up and I think there's still plenty of improvement to come."
